The Healing Power Of Herbs Is A Return To Our Roots
Whether or not herbs are beneficial to healing is a topic of much controversy. While herbal practitioners believe that natural remedies do work, the medical community tends to think otherwise unless scientific studies support the claims. The fact is that herbs have been used for healing purposes throughout the ages with some success. Before there were doctors, shamans, wise women, and other healers used herbs to treat many conditions. Many Native American medicine men say they learned about thealing power of herbs by observing their effects on animals, not so different from research done today.
Physicians stress a healthy diet as beneficial to prevent and sometimes treat disease. If the food we eat contains vitamins and minerals, then maybe we should not discount the value of herbs. Many medications used today are derived from plants and many nutritionists recommend a largely plant based diet. Many other societies use herbal treatments regularly. Chinese and Indian medicine often prescribes herbs and herbal preparations. Skeptics often cite the snake oil salesmen of old whose tonics were largely alcohol.
Research suggests that garlic may help with heart problems because it is known to lower cholesterol. Green tea and rose hips also contain catechins which may lower cholesterol. Rosehips can be made into a tasty tea and also contains large amounts of vitamin C. Garlic also has powerful antibiotic properties. For those of us who love garlic, its nice to know that it may have some health benefits.
Aloe vera has long been used to treat burns. I have a pot in my kitchen and it really does sooth a burn and prevents blistering. Its also great for sunburn. Aloe juice is sold and said to have a lot of beneficial properties. Chamomile tea has a calming effect and is good for insomnia. while peppermint tea is good for indigestion. Some herbs have antiseptic properties and before refrigeration was available, meat was often preserved with salt, sage, bay leaves, and thyme. Ginger tea is a very old remedy for nausea and I can say from personal experience that it works.
Herbs like garlic, Echinacea, milk thistle, sage, thyme, and rosemary are high in flavanoids and may have mild anti-inflammatory properties. These herbs can give a boost to the immune system and are particularly effective against viral infections. Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal remedies for cold and upper respiratory problems.
Today physicians are more open to the idea that some herbal preparations are of value in treating disease. Through research, they are finding that many plants may be useful in developing medications and some show promise in the treatment of cancer, HIV, and other diseases. Although I personally would not place my faith in herbal remedies alone, I am convinced that they have value in the healing power of herbs.
