Liver Herbs To Cleanse The Body's Main Filter
Most of us don’t think too much about our livers. We have no idea how much it affects our overall health. The liver is an amazing organ that cleans the impurities from our bodies. It breaks down toxic chemicals and hormones, converts protein to amino acids, produces antibodies to fight infection, helps the blood to clot, and controls blood sugar levels. That’s a pretty impressive list of functions. No, we don’t think about our liver until it isn’t doing its job. The liver has an amazing ability to regenerate itself and there are some liver herbs that support the liver and help it heal.
Hepatitis is a disease that can seriously damage the liver. It’s caused by a virus or overexposure to toxins. Twenty percent of alcoholics will develop hepatitis. IV drug users are also at risk. It can be a precursor to cirrhosis, a disease commonly associated with heavy drinkers. Cirrhosis changes the structure of the liver so that it has less blood flow. This causes the normally eliminated toxins to build up to a dangerous level. While alcohol use is a factor, cirrhosis can also be caused by poor nutrition and exposure to toxic substances. Sounds serious, right? It is, but there are herbs that are said to support the liver and help it to regenerate.
Many scientific studies in Germany and the United States have proven that some herbs are of great benefit in treating liver disease. Milk thistle is one such herb. It is full of antioxidants called falvinoids that protect the liver from exposure to heavy metals. Heavy metals are present in cigarette smoke, tin cans, some dental fillings, and even aluminum in antacids. The Chinese have used licorice for years to treat hepatitis. Licorice is said to increase production of interferon, which helps to fight liver disease. Ginger, turmeric, ginseng, and tamalaki are also used to support and heal the liver. Turmeric and tamalaki are herbs common to India and have been used by Ayurvedic practitioners for over 2000 years to treat liver problems. Ginger is often given in conjunction with other herbs because it improves the body’s ability to assimilate them.
Of course we can help ourselves by avoiding excessive alcohol use and smoking, but there is not much we can do to avoid everyday pollutants in the environment. It’s good to know there are some natural liver herbs to help protect and support the liver. Many physicians today combine herbal therapy with traditional treatment of liver disease.
