Herb School, A Growing Trend
Herbs have been used throughout the ages by nearly every culture. Modern herbalists use herbs as well as roots, bark, mushrooms, or any plant which grows naturally. In the U.S., there is no system of licensure or certification for herbalists. Professional groups may grant certification to those who members have reached a certain level of expertise. Most herbalists refer to themselves as teachers, healers, or counselors. There are herb schools in many areas of the country where you can learn about herbs and their use.
With growing interest in natural products, there are some industries in which you can find a position after getting training. Some herbalists start their own farms, or work in manufacturing of herbal products. Others prefer to teach or counsel people about the many uses of herbs. There are sometimes teaching positions in alternative medicine colleges. Finding these jobs is not easy because they do not advertise them in the usual way. Most people find out about them through professional organizations. Many herbalists have more than one job, running a shop and writing or teaching as well.
Ethnobotanists work to preserve traditional folk medicine of many different cultures. I always think of the Beverly Hillbillies. Granny was most certainly well versed in herbal therapy. We could all use a shot of her tonic from time to time.
There are herb schools with certificate programs in most areas of the country. Some focus on Ayurvedic practices, native to India. Ayurvedic practitioners focus on the whole person, physically, emotionally and spiritually using herbs traditional to India. The Blue Otter School in California focuses on Native American healing and herbs. Schools for the study of Chinese herbal remedies often offer acupuncture as well. Some programs are as little as four months in duration. There are also online courses. Tai Sophia Institute has schools all over the country and they offer two year certificate programs and master programs. The certificate programs are completed in 9 to 11 months and are taught one weekend per month. This is a convenient option for people who want to keep their jobs while they learn.
Whether you would like to pursue a career as an herbalist or just educate yourself on the use of herbs and natural remedies, there are classes to meet every need. Many doctors today incorporate herbal medicine into their practices. There are even holistic veterinary practitioners. It’s an interesting area of study. We can learn a lot from our ancestors. Taking a class at an herb school may show us a different way to manage our health problems.
