Goldenseal Herbs For Healing
Goldenseal herbs were used by the Native Americans both as a medicine and as a coloring agent. It was thought to be effective when used with red clover in treating certain cancers.
Goldenseal is often used as a multipurpose remedy. It may be used as a topical antimicrobial, but is also taken internally as a digestive aid. When used as a gargle, it is thought to heal canker sores. You can purchase it in salve, tincture, tablet, or bulk powder form and it is often used to boost the effect of other herbs it is blended with.
One thing that has definitely been proven to be false is that goldenseal will mask drug use in athletes and racehorses. It has no more effect on urine tests than drinking large amounts of water. It has been used in an attempt to mask the use of morphine in racehorses with no success.
The eclectic practitioners in the 1830’s used goldenseal extensively to treat cancers and swellings in the breasts. It was used for menstrual disorders and gastrointestinal complaints. It was also used to treat goiter in pregnant women. Cuthberton claimed that every case was cured by this use. He gave it three times a day after meals for three weeks to six months. He claimed that it worked after iodine and thyroid extracts had no effect.
Herbalists today consider goldenseal to an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, bitter tonic, laxative, and muscular stimulant. It is used for gastritis, colitis, ulcers, poor appetite, and liver disease. It has an astringent effect on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, the gastrointestinal tract, the bladder, rectum, and skin. Because it is so bitter, it stimulates the appetite and bile production.
Goldenseal should be avoided during pregnancy and given with great care to young children. It appears unlikely to be toxic when given in normal doses. Interactions with drugs like warfarin, ciclosporin, protease inhibitors and cardiac glycosides are potential concerns.
The goldenseal herb is in great danger of extinction due to overharvesting and habitat destruction. Mountaintop removal mining has been responsible for the destruction of the habitat of wild goldenseal. More than 60 million plants are picked each year without being replanted. Many herbalists recommend using caution in choosing goldenseal products as they may have been harvested in an irresponsible manner instead of organically cultivated.
