Herbs Supplements Are More Popular Today Than Ever

People today want to stay healthy and herbs supplements are increasingly popular. Even some physicians are beginning to recognize their value. Keep in mind that they are not a replacement for prescription drugs, but are meant to supplement your diet. Herbal therapy has been around for years. The Chinese have used herbs and alternative therapies for many illnesses for hundreds of years. Many cultures including American Indians have relied on herbs to treat a number of problems.

Herbs supplements are not regulated by the FDA in the same manner as prescription or over the counter drugs. The manufacturer of these products does not have to prove the safety of the supplement before it is put on the market. They are allowed to say that a supplement addresses a nutrient deficiency, supports health, or is linked to a particular body function, such as immunity if there is research to support the claim. These claims have to be followed by a statement that the FDA has not evaluated this product and they must say that the product is not intended to treat, cure or prevent any disease. Manufacturers are required to follow standards to ensure the product is processed consistently. Once the product is on the market the FDA monitors safety and if the product is proven to be unsafe, they can take action to remove it from the market.

Herbs Supplements Are Safe Alternative Treatment for Many Illnesses

Just because something is “natural” does not mean it is safe, so be careful. You wouldn’t go outside and pull up some weeds and ingest them, would you? If you are on prescription medication some herbs may cause a problem, so be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you are taking, no matter how innocent they seem. Your doctor will be able to access all the latest research on any herbs and advise you as to how to use them. Read the labels carefully and do not exceed the recommended dosage. If you have any adverse reactions, discontinue the supplement and call your doctor.

What Are Herbs Supplements Made from?

Herbal supplements are made from plants or plant parts, such as leaves, flowers, or seeds. They are used for their flavor, scent, or therapeutic properties. Supplements may contain a single herb or mixture of herbs. “Botanical” is often used as a synonym for “herb.” Certainly herbal and natural products are popular because people these days are concerned about what they are putting into their bodies. Herbs are used in everything from supplements to skincare and shampoo, and research has shown some to be effective for some health conditions, but further research is needed to obtain firm results. My grandmother used some herbs for different ailments. She used cloves for a toothache, ginger tea for stomach upsets, and aloe for burns. I think every family probably has some herbal home remedies that they have found effective.

Herbs supplements come in pills, capsules, extracts, and tea forms. If you are considering using one, research it thoroughly and if you have doubts, consult your physician.
